Rarely do I read aloud a book to my children that touches me as much as it does them. When I do, the experience is unforgettable. Ned: Barnardo Boy is a book unlike any we have read.Ned is the story of a fictional orphan making his own way in the slums of London during the late 1870s. A "nobody's child," he carries heavy packages to earn money for food and sleeps on the streets. Later, he is taken in at an orphanage, and finally he is sent to Canada as an emigrant farm hand. His experiences paint a vivid picture of London's poor at that time, as well as the mission work to the orphan children.
Barbara Coyle does a masterful job communicating the atmosphere and culture in this historical novel. The depravity, destitution, and loss of London's orphans are clearly understood without undue contemplation of the seedy side of slum life. Barbara touches our hearts with the pain and suffering so many endured during this troubling time in history, educating our children without sharing explicit details. Most importantly, she teaches important spiritual lessons - including salvation, love, forgiveness, diligence, and witnessing - skillfully and sweetly, as the story clearly demonstrates God's providential care for one of His own.
The result is a book with strong spiritual application that found me and my children convicted and challenged every chapter. Such endurance in trials, such satisfaction with little, and such hope in heartache left us looking at our own blessed lives with renewed gratefulness, contentment, and rejoicing. We all loved this book--we read it aloud and all ages enjoyed. Highly recommended!
We read this years ago before it was in print. We have a copy on printer paper gotten from a homeschool freebie site years ago. This is a fantastic book!! I still quote to my children and they quote to me, "As a twig is bent, so the tree is inclined" (which means from early on in life one needs to correct character problems because once you're grown into a tree, they are much more difficult to correct).
This is a precious, gripping tale that will stay with you for a long time. The Gospel is clearly presented at just the right time, the details of the era bring vivid pictures to mind, and you are transported, on the edge of your seat, chuckling and getting teary at all the appropriate times. A must read for adults, a great read-aloud for the family (great discussions to be had) or independent reading for 3rd or 4th grade and up. Don't miss out on the Unit Study guide. Orphan care, conversion, historical fiction.
Only an author like Barbara Coyle can take history, wrap it up in a perfectly historically accurate tale, and leave you salivating for more. Your heart wrenches for the plight of these street children, abandoned as young as toddlers, to survive alone on the streets of London. You'll learn much about the culture of the time and about the fortunate few who were blessed to find help from those who took the time to invest in the lives of these orphans.
More than a history lesson, this book is a compelling story that shows how God used human hands to ease the plight of these children.
This is not a book for "when we need something to read." This is a book you read immediately because you need to read it.
You need to have your tissues handy when you read this!
I wasn't sure what to expect when I started reading Barbara's book, Ned Barnardo Boy. I am saddened to admit how little I knew about that era and the poverty that existed then and there. Once I sat down to read the story, I wanted to read the entire thing in one sitting - hoping that life turned around for Ned!
Barbara did a great job of making the characters come alive. I could almost feel their pain as I read it, and celebrated with them when their pain turned to joy. And she does a good job of bringing the gospel message in as part of the story, without being "preachy."
It was clear that she had researched her topic well. I would certainly recommend this story for someone studying the England of that era - but also to someone just looking for a good, compelling, historical story.
